Scientists confirm the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet to prevent Alzheimer’s disease

Spanish media reported last November that scientists from the University of Malaga and the Biomedical Research Institute of Malaga have reached a very important conclusion: “For each point of adherence that the (Mediterran) dietary pattern is increased, the risk of Alzheimer’s disease decreases by 11%”. So is told in the academic article “Alzheimer’s Disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment and Mediterranean Diet. A Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta-Analysis“, published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine a few weeks ago.

This result was obtained after reviewing 11 studies and 589 academic articles in different scientific journals focused on determining to what extent the Mediterranean diet can be a protective factor against Alzheimer’s disease. These studies involved a target population of 12,458 people.

According to the MercaCei website, Professors Mario Gutiérrez-Bedmar and Natalia García-Casares led this important research. They concluded that promoting the Mediterranean diet at “early” ages, in combination with “healthy lifestyle interventions”, constitutes an important “protective factor against brain deterioration”.

As you know, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is an essential part of the Mediterranean diet. In fact, in April 2016 we already reported that some scientific studies were trying to establish the relationship between EVOO and the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.

So, it is reasonable to think that a proper combination of Mediterranean diet, exercise, and healthy habits – among them the slow culture – can help to avoid this terrible disease.

For our part, we make sure that the oil is the best possible.
