We have restored the “Tronera dry-stone little house” (in honor of Uncle Joaquím).
Our adopters, friends, and most seasoned readers know that on our estate in La Serra, we have been enjoying a dry-stone cabin for over a hundred years.
Dry stone is a modest yet robust construction technique. Very typical of the Terres de l’Ebre, it was used by shepherds and farmers to shelter from the sun and rain, store tools, or rest during their long shifts in the fields.
Our little house holds great sentimental value because, for decades, it has housed many of our ancestors. And, particularly, our Uncle Joaquim, brother of our father Alfredo, who passed away last year. You can see Joaquim’s photo in the “who we are” section of this same website.
Recent episodes of heavy rain had caused damage to the cabin. For this reason, and in tribute to our beloved uncle, Alfredo and Pierre, together with our cousin Joaquim Jr (son of Joaquim) and Miquel Àngel, a family friend and expert in dry stone, repaired the cabin. In our Facebook page you will find a few photographs of the task. As you will see, the highlight of the day was when Marga, our cousin’s wife, came to prepare us a delicious “surf and turf” paella on-site with the help of Irma. Quite a luxury to have lunch next to the cabin.
Most importantly: the cabin is once again ready and prepared to shelter many more friends, sponsors, and descendants for another hundred years… Or so we believe.
PS: Thank you for everything, Uncle Joaquim, and rest in peace.
Alfredo and Pierre Ralda
